Shortcut Methods for Maths in Bank PO Exam - Square of Numbers Ending in 5

You can use this shortcut method to square any two digit number ending in 5 in a single line without using the conventional method where you have to first multiply in two lines and then add in the third line.
In the above examples note that the answer always ends in 25 and the rest of the numbers are the product of the digit at tens place of the original number and its consecutive number.
Example:- 85 x 85

In the above example simply multiply 8 by it consecutive number 9  to get 72 and insert 25 at the end of the resultant number 7225 [8x9  25 = 7225]

Your answer is 7225.

Shortcut Method for Maths - Multiplication of a Two Digit Number by 11

You can use this shortcut method to multiply any two digit number by 11 in a single line without using the conventional method where you have to first multiply in two lines and then add in the third line.
Example:- 58 x11

In this method you get the answer as below:-
1. In the above example simply insert the total of the two digits in between the digits of the original number [5  (5+8)  8]
2. You Get [5  13  8]
3. Carry over 1 and add it to 5 to get your answer [6  3  8]

Your answer is 638.

Shortcut Method for Multiplication of Three Digit Numbers


You can use this method to multiply three digit numbers in a single line without using the conventional method where you have to first multiply in three lines and then add in the fourth line.
Example:- 583 x 764

In this method you get the answer in five easy steps:-
1. The digit at units place = 3x4=12. You get 2. Carry forward 1.
2. The digit at tens place = (4x8)+(6x3)+1 [carry forward from step 1]=51. You get 1. Carry forward 5.
3. The digit at hundreds place = (4x5)+(6x8)+(7x3)+5 [carry forward from step 2]=94. You get 4. Carry forward 9.
4. The digit at thousands place = (6x5)+(7x8)+9 [carry forward from step 3]=95. You get 5. Carry forward 9.
5. Rest of the digits = (7x5)+9 [carry forward from step 4]=44.

Your answer is 445412.

Beleive me it is not very tough, still very useful. Just memorise the above diagram and practice with a few examples and you'll learn how to use it.

This can also be used as a shortcut method for squares of three digit numbers.

Shortcut Methods for Maths in Bank PO Exam - Multiplication

Multiplication of Two Digit numbers
You can use this method to multiply two digit numbers in your mind without using the conventional method where you have to first multiply in two lines and then add in the third line.
Example:- 87 x 36
In this method you get the answer in three easy steps:-
1. The digit at units place = 6x7=42. You get 2. Carry forward 4.
2. The digit at tens place = (6x8)+(3x7)+4 [carry forward from step 1]=73. You get 3. Carry forward 7.
3. Rest of the digits = (3x8)+7 [carry forward from step 2]=31.

Your answer is 3132.

Beleive me it is very simple and useful. Just practice with two three examples and you'll learn how to use it.

This can be used as a shortcut method for squares of two digit numbers. It is advisable that you use this method to find squares of numbers greater than 30. Upto 30 you have to memorise to save time.
